Americans' honors the birthday of the United States of America on this day. It’s a patriotic tradition. Citizens hang American flags from their homes, buildings are decorated in red, white, and blue. The 4th of July is a day of picnics and boisterous parades, marching bands and patriotic speeches. At night there are concerts and colorful fireworks display. This important holiday gives everyone a reason to fly the American flag.

The written statement declared that the 13 North American colonies intended to separate from Britain. The colonies grew and Americans felt that the British government was treating them unfairly. Fairy tales exist since ancient times and are present in all cultures around the world. Fairy tales include the appearance of fantastic elements in the form of talking animals and magic and enchantment. Typically it features folkloric fantasy characters, such as dwarves, dragons, elves, fairies, witches, gnomes, goblins, mermaids, trolls, unicorns, princesses, knights and heroes and heroines facing terrible ordeals. They were written for the first time in17th century. A fairy tale is a type of short story and the term is mainly used for stories with origins in the European tradition. A happy ending is one of their characteristics features, these stories are about hope.

Some of the best known are from Hans Christian Andersen (The Beetle who went on his Travels, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea,The Snow Man, The Snow Queen, Thumbelina or Little Tiny and The Ugly Duckling. Another important author are the Grimms Fairy Tales - Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Goldilocks And The Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Three Little Pigs and The Wise Little Girl. As a child my favorite among all these was Hans Christian Andersen's The emperor's new clothes.

The brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected stories that depicted the life of central Europeans of the time. They were inspired by Germanic oral storytelling, popular tradition, and folklore of the region. Many stories were based on real and sometimes gruesome events. These darker stories might be too terrifying for today’s kids and even adults. Adults were the audience of a fairy tale just as often as children but in the 19th and 20th centuries, the fairy tale became associated with children's literature. The fairy tales carried a powerful morality and lessons to the reader. We can find the influence of fairy tales also in art, cinema, dance like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, and song. Modern authors and movie animators use the code of fairy tale and still create magic and enchantment that is able to please kids and adults together.

There are lots of things to know about pirates and piracy and one of it is that pirates can be called lots of names - sea robber, rogue, corsair, buccaneer, sea dog, scalawag, picaroon, sea villain, swashbuckler, and sea marauder. When I think pirates I think about those guys that caused trouble and mayhem around the Caribbean in the 17th and 18th Centuries, drinking grog and rum and speaking with some kind of Cornish accent. Piracy was around from early times in the history of man. Roman leader, Julius Caesar, was kidnapped by pirates! The earliest records show pirates in ancient Greece.

Popular pirate hangouts included Madagascar, the Caribbean, Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. From the African coast to the New World, pirates sailed the seas and they were feared. One of the most famous pirates is Blackbeard. There is no record of him murdering any prisoners. There were privateers too, who were nothing more than commissioned pirates by monarchies that allowed “legalized” piracy to help finance wars.

The Jolly Roger, a flag featuring a skull and crossbones is often associated with pirates. This flag was designed to frighten potential victims to surrendering their loot without having to put up a fight.

Every year on 19th September, it is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, it’s when you can talk funny and imitate Jack Sparrow in the office. Here’s a list of a few of helpful terms: Account (as in “to go on account”): to take up piracy; doubloon: favorite pirate booty was this Spanish gold coin; flotilla: small fleet; jolly roger: pirate flag; piece of eight: Spanish coin; walk the plank: when pirates had prisoners walk the plank into the ocean to get rid of them.

Today, the sea robbers are warlords and terrorists. They have sophisticated GPS equipment, weapons, and fast boats. The most dangerous waters are off the coast of Somalia. You never heard about it? That is because piracy is often not reported in fear that clients take their business elsewhere if they feel their cargo is not safe. It will never end because it’s impossible to patrol and protect the thousands of miles of water. The Somali coastline is a very long one. You may have watched a movie with Tom Hanks called Captain Phillips - The film is inspired by the true story of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, an incident during which merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage by pirates in the Indian Ocean led by Abduwali Muse.
