Halloween traditions and tshirts

Hello friends and Zazzlers!

It's October again and in the United States and Canada adults and kids prepare to celebrate the Halloween on October 31. Decorations in orange, black and purple fill the stores and houses. Some are doing their homemade costumes, some are browsing the internet for the most bizarre proposals available. And some are counting the days for the the end of it! It's a very popular tradition but Halloween does not please everyone.

Halloween is a shortened version of "All Hallows' Even," the eve of All Hallows' Day. "Hallow" is the same as "holy person," in old English. All Hallows' Day is All Saints' Day, the day that Catholics commemorate in order to honor all the saints at once. It's the first day of November. In Portugal the 2nd day of November is when families honor the dead visiting cemeteries and leaving flowers on the graves.

Originally, Christians observed All Saints' Day on May 13. But the Church moved the observance to correspond with Samhain 's  pagan fall festival. Most of the traditions of Halloween date back to Samhain (sow-en), or "end of summer" . This was a festival that highlighted the change of seasons and of people's habits. Samhain marked the final harvest of the year. The Celts believed that in this occasion the world of the dead and the world of the living were close. The spirits of the dead could then travel their way into the world of the living!

It's curious how both traditions came together. The date of the celebration was a way that church found to incorporate pagan tradition in the calendary so more people could become familiar with Catholic faith. But the Samhain Celtic traditions of dead returning to the world of living did not please Christians.

Later the church created All Souls' Day, on November 2nd, like I wrote before, an occasion to recognize all dead. It was ok to honor the death but wandering spirits were associated with the devil.

I first learned about Halloween from movies and then in my English class at highschool. It may seem a silly holiday if we don't care to know how it all started. Traditions like trick-or-treat or carving pumpkins have an ancient origin. Trick-or-Treating has its origin in medieval times's practice. People would make "soul cakes," bread desserts with a currant topping. Then children would go door-to-door begging for the cakes, and that was called "souling". In exchange for the cake the child would say a prayer for a death relative of the cake giver. In Portugal there was a similar ritual called Pão por Deus. In the city of Coimbra it's called Bolinhos e Bolinhós. This tradition is partically inexistant nowadays. Many here blame Halloween for it as Portuguese children are adopting the foreign tradition, the masks and even the "trick or treat" say instead of "Bolinhos e bolinhós". The Celts would dress up and parade to lead the wandering spirits away. They also walked door to door asking for food to give to the gods or spirits.

And what about the Jack'O Lanterns? Celts would bring home an ember from the communal bonfire at the end of the night in hollowed-out turnips. But according to tan Irish legend, Stingy Jack's spirit carries a turnip lantern through the darkness. He was a bad character so he was turned away from heaven. But he also did not get to go enter hell as he tricked the devil once or twice. The devil gave him a hot ember to light the way in the dark. In Ireland and Scotland these jack'o lanterns are popular decorations. When the Irish emigrated to USA they took the tradition but started to use pumpkins because they were more abundant and easy to carve. Pumpkins originated in Central America and were a popular crop among Native Americans.

Let's imagine that you are not in the mood for DIY Halloween costume this year. Or maybe you had your share of costumes and you just want something simple. For your and your kid or baby. How about some spooky, creepy, funny or cute Halloween Zazzle tshirts? Let's take a look at some possibilities then!

Halloween, scary movies and greeting cards

Hello friends and Zazzlers!

A couple of weeks I watched a movie called The host. I kind of liked it. The host is about a monster that emerges from Seoul's Han River to attack people. He takes a little girl with him to an underground passage. Her family joins efforts to save her. I was positivelly impressed with this corean movie! Actually the story is good and characters are fine too. Usually I do not watch movies with monsters, zombies or supernatural forces. It's not that I am easilly scared. I even like to jump on my seat once or twice! But I do prefer other well written stories with some quality suspense and less horror scenes. Many recent horror movies are over what I consider acceptable. Too much blood, too much of everything but a good story. As the movies are one important source to the collective imaginary Halloween imagery is now probably more horrifying than it was some years ago. And maybe some monsters are really too scary to the little ones!Probably some parents find motifs to worry about it, things are different than they were when they were children.

When I think about it it's a bit strange that people enjoy Halloween because bottom line it celebrates the mistery of death. Death is the unknown. For some it's the end and that's it. For others it's another beginning. Some are at ease with it, some fear it. But I don't consider it a pleasant subject! And what's so funny about being scared afterall? No one like's to be scared for real. Maybe liking Halloween or liking scary movies is all about the same reason. People enjoy the emotional response to it. It's a question of adrenaline and hormones, not a rational thing. This is kind of a game where you can try a bit of danger but you know that you're safe. For children it can be a great way of growing up. As they play dressed in costumes they manipulate the monsters and ghosts faith and they overcome their fear of it! Some kids not not dress in scary costumes, some pick other characters. I guess they can feel like an actress or actor for a day. A hero maybe! With adults is the same. It's just a way to escape routine and drop inhibitions.

One part of celebrating Halloween is sending greeting cards. Many of us use email and e-cards and mobile phone text messaging to send greetings. But Halloween Greeting Cards are very popular.

Here's a sample of some of the best Halloween Greeting Cards I found available from Zazzle stores. Some are funny, some are scary. Some are created with digital, some are pencil and ink. But I like them all. Take a look and enjoy the art and talent of Zazzle designers and illustrators! Best WITCHES to you!

The colors of Halloween and a new Zazzle store

Halloween: it's an holiday observed on October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day. Its pagan origins can be traced to the Celtic festival of Samhain. This Festival was celebrated in ancient England and Ireland to mark the beginning of the Celtic new year.
The colors of Halloween are warm, bright, fun and spooky! The color symbolism makes us associate black with death, night, witches, black cats, bats, vampires. The color orange makes us think about pumpkins, jack o' lanterns and Autumn. In the Autumn the leaves on trees change to warm colors like red, orange, brown, and yellow. The color purple is about the supernatural and mysticism. Green and red are also prominent in modern Halloween images and products. Green is about monsters and goblins and red is about blood and evil.

The credit for beginning the holiday as a festival of harvest was given to the Celtics. Golden and orange are colors that can easily be associated with harvest culture. The celebration of death and supernatural was central to this ancient Festival. The black color is often associated with absence of light or darkness. Samhain was an after sunset celebration. This is a possible explanation for the origin of Halloween colors. For more information about Halloween read this article by Rick Branch and James Walker or Google it!

This time of the year is a time of change. The silly season ends and people get ready to take life more seriously.I allways feel sad that I have to say good bye to the good weather and to summer late afternoons in the beach. Autumn is a time to restart with the old routines and even to start new projects. And so did I. I had a rough year. One of the consequenses of it was months without creating new products for my old Zazzle store.

Finally it's time for a comeback and I decided to open a new Zazzle store. This is the blog for that store. As you may already know by know this Zazzle store is called No Boring White. It wasn't easy to find a name! I created the store in February but the opening was constantly delayed until now. It has been almost two weeks since I started and it has not been easy to pick up the old routines and face all the changes that Zazzle undergo in recent months. I feel rusty and all I see ahead it's lots and lots of work and maybe little return. As some of you know all my designs and illustrations are created by myself. Like many other fellow Zazzlers I do not use clipart or any other graphic artists work. The creative process is slow and not easy. The next step will be to upload and tag all the work. This is time consuming and boring. After that comes promotion of the store and products. It's a never ending job!

So why creating a new store? Why not stick to the ones I already have, Papelustro and A Portuguese Love? My idea is to keep A Portuguese Love for Portuguese theme related products only. I also have some hope that this store boosts my creativity in a different way that A Portuguese Love or Papelustro could not. And it will be easy to markett the products if I keep it separate. But starting again almost from zero it has been complicated. On the other hand it has been good to get back in touch with some fellow Zazzlers. I cherish the support they gave me in the past and the recent warm welcomes. And for now that's it! I invite you all to follow me on this new adventure. Welcome to No Boring White!
