Save honeybee and native pollinators!

Learn more and download a beautiful poster with this illustration to spread awareness!

Apis mellifera is the bee which pollinate crops like apples, blueberries and more, are dying, because bee hives are dying off or disappearing. One problem is a colony collapse disorder (CCD) a mystery that seems no one can solve.Pesticides are killing bees, these are called neonicotinoids and  biological threats also! Cultures like wheat and corn are no good for bees, not enough polen, but they cover large amount of land! Just think if honey bee will go extinct! It will be a calamity! Help saving the bees!

Celebrate World Oceans Day everyday

                                               Want to see more?
Well, this time I was late. I forgot all about it. World Oceans Day isn't as celebrated as Earth Day. At least that's my idea. But we are all connected to the oceans no matter if we live inland or on the coast. For most Portuguese the sea is a source of inspiration. We are proud of our history. We sailed the seas with bravery and discovered new worlds to the world a few centuries ago! I live on the seaside and honestly that's one of my big life joys. I would love to have done a selfie for the sea! Did you make a promise?

In a few days the beach will be ready to welcome people. It was already very nicely populated during Easter with students enjoying a bit of sun in Easter break and foreigners, mostly Spanish. Spanish are fond of this beach where I live  since 1950's! I like everything about the coast way of life, the oceans and the life they hold. These illustrations I created for Zazzle products are inspired by the beach and the ocean and all the joy we can get from it. Lots of products for kids! They are selling well and I'm pleased.

I found lots of information about this day at Canada Government's site. That's because it was the Government of Canada that originally proposed the concept of World Ocean Day in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. As of 2009, June 8 has been officially declared by the United Nations as "World Oceans Day."

Here's some good advice we can use everyday to commemorate Oceans Day . I took it from that site. It reads like this:

-Learn all you can. Read, surf the web and experience the ocean directly.
-Conserve the water. Be careful when washing your car or watering your lawn.
-Reduce household pollutants. Cut down and properly dispose of herbicides, pesticides and cleaning products.
-Reduce waste. Dispose of trash properly. Where possible, recycle, reuse and compost.
-Reduce automobile pollution. Use fuel efficient vehicles or carpool. Recycle motor oil and repair oil and air conditioning leaks.
-Protect ocean wildlife. Don’t dispose of fishing lines, nets or plastic items in or near the water.
-Be considerate of sea life habitats. Don’t bother sea birds, mammals and turtles or their nesting grounds. Support marine protected areas.
-Get involved. Take part in a beach cleanup or other ocean-oriented activities.
-Plan an Oceans Day event in your community.
-Care! Pass on your knowledge!

Expo '98 (1998 Lisbon World Exposition) was an official specialised World's Fair held in Lisbon, Portugal from 22 May to 30 September 1998. The theme of the fair was "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future," chosen in part to commemorate 500 years of Portuguese discoveries. The Expo ’98 was a landmark event that transformed the eastern zone of the city into a visionary project, reconverting an important part of Lisbon by creating a modern urban space. It has a train station, a shopping centre and an extensive complex that combines culture, leisure, homes and businesses.Opened during the Expo’98, the Oceanário de Lisboa is one the largest public aquaria in Europe. The TV spot with the babies swimming underwater remains as wonderful as it was when we first watch it sixteen years ago.

The street store - people helping people

Today I bring you something a bit different. It's a great project called The Street Store. It started in Cape Town, South Africa. But this idea can work anywhere and The Street Store is open source like all good ideas should! Watch this inspirational video, I am sure you'll enjoy it!

"When we launched the first Street Store we didn’t know what to expect. We had never done anything like this before. It was new. Strange. And exciting. We kept umming and ahhing wondering if we were ready. But we pulled up our socks and decided to just jump in.
We didn’t know what would happen, but what happened, was beautiful.
Over 1,000 homeless people visited our store that day. Each put together an outfit that they wanted. An outfit, that for many, was the first they had ever been able to choose for themselves.
We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the Cape Town community. Without each of you, it would literally have been impossible.
This was our first pop-up store. But is certainly not our last."

Buying Father's Day Greeting Cards Online

Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide. In Portugal it's celebrated in March 19 and in the days before Father's Day teachers help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for children to take home. The same happens with Mother's Day.

This modern holiday is about fathers importance in their children lifes and celebrates fatherhood and male parenting. Many countries observe this day on the third Sunday in June. On Father’s Day people visit their fathers and offer cards or gifts. I created two illustrations for Father's Day greeting cards, one for boys and other for girls.

I tried to find the origin for this celebration. When and why did it start? There is the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun worship because some believe the sun is the father of the universe. The June solstice occurs around the same time as Father's Day.

In the United States there was a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd. She was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations.
Her father raised six children by himself after the death of his wife. This was unusual at that time. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father's Day was held in June was in 1910.

I also read that it's origins may lie in a memorial service held for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in 1907. Father's Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon. Read all about it here.

Blogging about quitting smoking

Hello!

World No Tobacco Day is coming! On May 31 a lot of people, non-governmental organizations and governments will organize various activities to make people aware of the health problems that tobacco use can cause. There will be public marches and demonstrations, a lot of us will find this day to be the perfect moment to encourage people to stop smoking. Thinking of it I created a line of cute and simple products on Zazzle - Quit smoking please! Have you checked it?

Do you smoke? I used to smoke when I was a teen. But it was really something I was just doing to fit the group. I never enjoyed it that much. Once I realized my health was more important than the pleasure I took in smoking I quitted cigarettes. I realized that I did not become less popular in the group. That was a great choice I did. But I only realized it when my father decided to quit cigarettes. It was very hard for him. For me was easy. I was not, yet, addicted to the habit of smoking!

Have you ever tried to tell someone to leave the cigarettes behind? If you did you know. Smokers give us lots of excuses to not give up smoking. If you pick a shit of paper and ask a smoker person to write the reasons to quit smoking that shit will be full soon. There are more reasons to quit than reasons to smoke! But even in black and white smokers will cling to the one or two reasons they feel justify the smoking. My father, for example, he feared to gain weight. It seems to be true that people will gain about 5 kilograms. But they can do something about it. Why not starting to do some walking after dinner or leaving the car at home some days of the week for starters? It does not mean that the extra weight will be there forever. After a while a person can lose it! Is that such a terrible thing? And if you’re a skinny smoker, then you don’t have anything to worry about, right?

I wrote in my previous post about secondhand smoke. When my father quitted no one was paying attention to passive smoke. But, yes, now it’s already known that people next to smokers inhale toxic smoke as well and that’s harmful. Many people does not care about what they are doing to themselves. But hey will be immediaty concerned if we mention the consequences of their actions upon others. So secondhand smoke might be an interesting argument! Another idea: there is no safe range for smoking. With cigarettes the only way to stay safe is not to smoke. To smoke less will not improve a smoker’s health in anyway. Also, smoking speeds up your ageing process. So, why? Why to accept it? Why not fight it back? Learning to live without smoke is hard but once a smoker regain control of their life I am sure that is one triumph that person will never forget! My father did not forget!

Well, there are lots of things we can discuss with a smoker to try to convince them to quit. I believe that to quit smoking today is as difficult as it was for my father 40 years ago. But today smokers can find a lot of information and support easily. To know that there’s a community of people in the same boat as they are can be a great help for smokers. My father attended some local group meetings and kept in touch with the other smokers by phone. Today we have internet! I found interesting material on the internet about quitting smoking. There are lots of sites, forums and blogs. I sellected just a few blogs for you.

The first blog it's called QUIT CIGS 4FREE - "You’re going to stop smoking. Don’t worry about it, just know that it’s going to happen." It's written by Rob. He says he used to smoke a pack a day for over fifteen years. After many unsuccessful attempts, he gave up cigarettes over seven years ago and have never been tempted to smoke since. Inspiring, isn't he?

Then I found another one called CIGARETTE ZOOM. The blog is about quit smoking and celebrity gossip!

Become an Ex it’s about learning to live your life without cigarettes.

I CAN QUIT is a site maintained by the Australian government but useful to anyone who needs to quit tobacco.
